This contemporary art sculpture is the result of a triple desire: that of SANEF, which wanted to give a historic vocation to the eastern motorway, which links Paris to Strasbourg, that of the General Council of the Meuse, which wanted to pay tribute to the last soldier, Lazare Ponticelli, who died on March 12, 2008, and that of the Lorraine artist, Paul Flickinger, painter and sculptor very marked by local history. Majestic 5.10 meters high and visible from the highway, it represents the symbol of peace and unity found in Europe. It caricatures two reunited and serene faces, those of France and Germany reconciled. Located along the A4 motorway, a link between the two countries (the A4 motorway serves German territory from Paris), this monumental sculpture is made from white Carrara marble. As a reminder of the past of the confrontation between the two nations of France and Germany, it pays tribute to the combatants of the Great War. Two plaques, affixed to the base, recall the names of the first two soldiers killed on August 2, 1914 in Jonchery (Territoire de Belfort) and of the last two French and German veterans of the Great War who died in 2008.
